The operation was carried out by Ireland’s Department of Justice and the Garda National Immigration Bureau. The charter flight departed Dublin and arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Friday morning.
Irish authorities stated that the individuals were removed after deportation orders had been issued. Two of those deported were also reported to have criminal convictions in Ireland.
The operation reportedly cost about €735,000 for the aircraft, excluding VAT, making it one of Ireland’s costly recent deportation exercises.
Ireland’s Justice Minister, Jim O’Callaghan, said the country’s immigration system must be rules-based and robust, while also noting that the majority of South Africans living in Ireland are legally resident and contribute positively to society.
