Jamaica has confirmed that citizens of 16 African countries, including South Africa, Ghana and Kenya, can travel to the Caribbean nation without a visa. However, Nigeria is not among the countries eligible for the visa-free arrangement.
According to Jamaica’s Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA), the visa waiver applies to African countries that have bilateral agreements with Jamaica, many of which are linked through Commonwealth relationships and other diplomatic arrangements.
The African countries currently eligible for visa-free entry are:
- South Africa
- Ghana
- Kenya
- Uganda
- Tanzania
- Botswana
- Namibia
- Malawi
- Mauritius
- Mozambique
- Rwanda
- Zambia
- Zimbabwe
- Lesotho
- Eswatini
- The Gambia
Despite being a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, Nigeria remains on Jamaica’s visa-required list, meaning Nigerian passport holders must obtain a visa before travelling to the Caribbean island.
As of the time of publication, Jamaican authorities have not announced any changes to Nigeria’s visa policy or indicated plans to extend visa-free access to Nigerian travellers.
The development has generated discussion on social media, with some Nigerians expressing disappointment over the country’s exclusion, while others have urged both governments to strengthen diplomatic relations and pursue reciprocal visa agreements that could make travel easier for citizens of both nations.
For now, Nigerians planning to visit Jamaica must continue to apply for a visa before departure in line with the country’s existing immigration requirements.
