Following Peter Ameh’s prediction that Peter Obi could become Nigeria’s next president in 2027, political discussions have intensified across the country. While parties are already positioning themselves for the next election, some Nigerians are asking a different question: Should politics take a back seat to governance?
One perspective is that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Peter Obi could find common ground on national development rather than political rivalry, particularly as conversations around constitutional reforms, including greater devolution of powers and a more regional approach to governance, continue.
Supporters of this view argue that if Nigeria eventually adopts a system that gives states or regions greater control over their resources, infrastructure and economic planning, political leaders could focus more on developing their respective regions instead of remaining in perpetual campaign mode.
Under such a system, regions would be judged by their economic performance, job creation, education, healthcare, security and infrastructure. Strong regional development, they argue, would naturally produce credible national leaders in the future.
Advocates believe that collaboration between experienced leaders across party lines could help address pressing national challenges such as insecurity, inflation, unemployment and electricity shortages before the country enters another election cycle.
However, others maintain that healthy political competition is essential in a democracy. They argue that opposition parties play a vital role in holding the government accountable and presenting Nigerians with alternative policies and leadership options.
Ultimately, whether a Tinubu–Obi partnership is feasible remains uncertain, as both politicians belong to different political camps with distinct visions and priorities. For now, any such alliance remains speculative.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general election, many citizens will continue to judge political leaders not only by their campaign promises but by their ability to deliver tangible improvements in governance and the economy.
