The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while he was being held captive by suspected bandits, describing the incident as a tragic loss to his family, the state, and the nation at large.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, who disclosed that the retired military officer died from health complications while in captivity.
According to the statement, Major General Abubakar suffered from diabetes and hypertension, conditions that reportedly worsened during his detention.
“The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement noted.
The state government revealed that concerted efforts had been made by both government authorities and security agencies to secure his release. Unfortunately, those efforts ended in tragedy with the retired officer’s passing.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed profound sorrow over the development, extending his condolences to the bereaved family. He described the incident as a dark moment for Katsina State and emphasized the urgent need to intensify efforts against criminal groups threatening peace and security across the region.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborating closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the abduction are identified and brought to justice.
Governor Radda further assured residents that his government remains resolute in its determination to combat banditry and safeguard lives and property throughout Katsina State.
The state government also offered prayers for the repose of the late general’s soul and called on citizens to continue supporting security agencies in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
Background
Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, were abducted on May 30, 2026, when suspected armed bandits ambushed their Peugeot 406 vehicle near Zakin Baure village in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
During the attack, their driver sustained gunshot injuries but survived the incident. The abduction sparked widespread concern and renewed discussions about the security challenges facing parts of northern Nigeria.
