A new statewide development emerged on August 19, 2026. The Lagos State House of Assembly has begun considering Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s request to reorder the ₦4.44 trillion 2026 Lagos budget, with lawmakers pressing for money to be redirected toward projects capable of being completed and delivering visible benefits before year-end. The proposal has passed second reading and is now before the House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget.
What changed: Sanwo-Olu is asking the Assembly to move allocations away from slower-performing programmes and MDAs toward areas where additional funding could accelerate execution. At the end of Q2, Lagos reported 69% overall budget performance: 73% recurrent expenditure and 66% capital expenditure. The governor says uneven implementation among MDAs is slowing delivery of capital projects.
The debate has also introduced an important grassroots dimension. Lawmaker Aro Moshood argued that redistributed funds should reach projects that residents can actually see and benefit from across constituencies. Kehinde Joseph specifically identified flooding, drainage and waste management as areas requiring attention.

The key question is whether drainage, roads, waste infrastructure and other delayed community projects gain or lose funding when the budget is reordered.
