| New Partnership Signals Growing International Confidence in Lagos Economy
|
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has received a high-level delegation from the European Investment Bank (EIB), led by Vice President Ambroise Fayolle, during an official visit to Lagos House, Marina.
The meeting, which also included European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, focused on transportation infrastructure, economic development, investment opportunities, and support for small and medium-sized businesses across Lagos State.
The visit represents another significant vote of confidence in Lagos as Nigeria’s commercial capital and one of Africa’s leading investment destinations.
NIGERIA NOW EIB’S LARGEST AFRICAN MARKET
During the engagement, the European Investment Bank disclosed that Nigeria became its largest country of operations in Africa in 2025, with investments reaching approximately €550 million.
The funding includes support for:
• Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
• Digital innovation and technology development
• Green economy projects
• Financial inclusion initiatives
• Infrastructure development
This position further strengthens Nigeria’s importance within the European Union’s Global Gateway investment strategy.
OMI EKO PROJECT TAKES CENTRE STAGE
A major focus of the discussions was the Omi Eko Project, Lagos State’s ambitious plan to transform water transportation across the state.
With roughly one-third of Lagos covered by water, the project aims to reduce traffic congestion by creating a modern ferry transportation network integrated with road and rail systems.
The project includes:
âś… Modern ferry terminals
âś… Improved waterways infrastructure
âś… Safer navigation channels
âś… Modern passenger ferries
âś… Integration with road and rail transport systems
According to project estimates, journeys that currently take up to two hours by road could be reduced to less than one hour through efficient water transportation.
OVER €360 MILLION IN EUROPEAN SUPPORT
The Omi Eko initiative has attracted substantial international backing through a combination of loans and grants.
The support package includes:
• European Investment Bank (EIB) financing
• French Development Agency (AFD) support
• European Union grants through the Global Gateway Initiative
Combined European support is estimated at more than €360 million, making it one of the largest international transportation investments currently underway in Lagos.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO LAGOS RESIDENTS
Beyond the figures and agreements, the real significance lies in the opportunities this investment can create.
Potential benefits include:
Job Creation
Construction, engineering, transportation, logistics, technology, and maintenance sectors are expected to benefit directly and indirectly from the project.
Reduced Traffic Congestion
Improved water transportation could ease pressure on major road corridors and improve daily commuting experiences.
Increased Investor Confidence
Large-scale international financing often signals confidence in a city’s economic future, attracting additional private sector investments.
Better Business Environment
Improved mobility and transportation infrastructure can reduce operating costs and increase productivity across the state.
Support for Small Businesses
European-backed financing programmes are expected to improve access to funding for SMEs, startups, and entrepreneurs.
THE BIGGER QUESTION FOR LAGOS
As international investors continue to commit resources to Lagos, an important challenge remains:
How can these investments translate into meaningful opportunities for young people, entrepreneurs, artisans, manufacturers, and local communities?
Infrastructure alone does not create prosperity.
The greatest success of projects like Omi Eko will ultimately be measured by the jobs created, businesses supported, and quality of life improvements delivered to Lagos residents.
OGASTV ANALYSIS
The visit by the European Investment Bank is more than a diplomatic engagement.
It is a signal that Lagos is increasingly being viewed as a strategic investment destination within Africa.
If properly implemented, the Omi Eko Project could become one of the most transformative transportation initiatives in Lagos in decades.
For investors, it represents opportunity.
For government, it represents responsibility.
For residents, it represents hope for a more connected, efficient, and economically competitive Lagos.

For OgasTv, I would also add a follow-up question to readers:
“How should Lagos ensure that international investments create jobs for local youths and businesses?”
