The Nigeria Police Force has imposed a statewide movement restriction for the Osun governorship election from 12:00 midnight on Friday, August 14, until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The Force says roughly 15,000 police personnel have been deployed, alongside a DIG-led command structure, Commissioners of Police assigned across the state, helicopters and surveillance drones.
The Police also reiterated that Amotekun and other non-state security groups are barred from election-security operations. FRSC has separately begun deploying personnel and vehicles to support enforcement of the movement restriction.
Why it matters: Osun is moving from political campaigning into a full election-security operation. The scale of deployment suggests authorities are treating the poll as a high-risk national test, not a routine off-cycle election. INEC has also begun final deployment preparations across the 30 LGAs.
Confirmed: the movement restriction, approximately 15,000 police deployment, prohibition of non-state security actors, aerial surveillance, and heightened INEC-office security are supported by official Police and FRSC communications and contemporaneous reporting.
Not yet confirmed: reports of widespread vote buying and isolated arrests are circulating, but I would not treat allegations implicating particular parties or individuals as established without corroborating law-enforcement or electoral-agency evidence.
