The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, alongside key stakeholders in Nigeria’s maritime sector, is set to headline the 2026 Shipping Correspondent Association of Nigeria (SCAN) Dockworkers’ Day celebration.
The event, scheduled to hold on June 4, 2026, at Rockview Hotels, Apapa, will focus on advancing sustainable practices and improving welfare standards for dockworkers across Nigerian seaports.
This year’s edition is themed “Green Ports: Sustainable Practices for Dockworkers,” and is expected to drive critical conversations around environmentally responsible port operations, adoption of modern technologies, and better working conditions for dockworkers in the country.
Among the prominent personalities expected at the event are the immediate past President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Adewale Adeyanju, and the President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping (NCS), Aminu Umar.
According to SCAN, the initiative is designed to align Nigeria’s port operations with global environmental standards while ensuring dockworkers are adequately prepared for the ongoing transition towards greener and technology-driven maritime systems.
In a joint statement signed by SCAN President, Moses Ebosele, and Chairman of the Organising Committee, Yusuf Babalola, the association described Dockworkers’ Day as an important platform for recognising the immense contributions of dockworkers to Nigeria’s economy.
The association further noted that the evolving global maritime industry has made it necessary for dockworkers to acquire relevant skills and tools needed to adapt to green port initiatives and digital transformation in shipping operations.
Aminu Umar is expected to deliver the keynote address at the event, while Adewale Adeyanju, who also serves as the Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), will chair the occasion.
Goodwill messages are also expected from top maritime agencies and stakeholders, including the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), and the Acting Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
Industry stakeholders believe the event will further strengthen conversations around sustainability, innovation, and improved welfare within Nigeria’s maritime sector.
