President Bola Tinubu is set to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
The address is one of several events outlined by the Federal Government to mark the annual observance of Democracy Day, according to the Inter-Ministerial Committee inaugurated on Tuesday to coordinate the nationwide programme.
Line-Up of Democracy Day Activities
The Federal Government has scheduled a series of events leading up to June 12, including:
- A World Press Conference on June 4
- Special Juma’at prayers on June 5
- An inter-denominational church service on June 7
- A Democracy Day public lecture on June 9
- Youth and women-focused programmes on June 10
- A Presidential Broadcast on June 12
- A Democracy Day Gala Night
These activities are designed to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and celebrate the nation’s progress since the return to civilian rule.
Honouring MKO Abiola and Democracy Heroes
During the inauguration of the committee, the Federal Government paid tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola and other heroes of the June 12 struggle.
According to a statement issued by Yomi Odunuga, Media Aide to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume described Democracy Day as a significant opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of Nigerians who fought tirelessly for democratic governance.
Akume noted that the democratic institutions and values being strengthened across the country today are rooted in the efforts and sacrifices of patriots who championed the cause of democracy in Nigeria.
He paid special tribute to the late MKO Abiola, whose dedication and sacrifice played a pivotal role in securing the recognition of June 12 as Nigeria’s official Democracy Day.
Government to Showcase Achievements
The SGF stated that this year’s celebration will also provide an opportunity for the Federal Government to highlight its achievements and reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles, institutional reforms, and national development.
According to Akume, the administration of President Bola Tinubu intends to use the occasion to demonstrate the progress made in consolidating democracy, strengthening institutions, and implementing key reforms despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
Preparations in Full Swing
With only days remaining before the anniversary, Akume directed committee members to commence work immediately to ensure the successful execution of all approved activities.
He emphasized that the celebration would be “modest but purposeful,” reflecting the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and prudent management of public resources.
The committee has been divided into several sub-committees responsible for different aspects of the programme. Akume also instructed all sub-committee secretaries to submit their proposed budgets for approval.
Expressing confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver a successful event, he urged all stakeholders to work collaboratively to ensure the celebration serves as a fitting tribute to Nigeria’s democratic heroes and a reaffirmation of the nation’s commitment to democratic governance.
Composition of the Committee
The committee is chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and includes key government officials such as the Ministers of Information, Interior, Defence, Finance, and Foreign Affairs. Other members include the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and other senior government representatives.
The Significance of June 12
Nigeria observes Democracy Day every June 12 to honour the legacy of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in the country’s history and believed to have been won by the late Chief MKO Abiola.
The day also serves as a reminder of the nation’s democratic struggles and celebrates Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, reinforcing the values of freedom, justice, and representative governance.
